Who's Who in Washington State

Black Achievement Washington (BAWA)

Welcome to BAWA — a space created with purpose, pride, and passion. We are here to celebrate and elevate the rich legacy of Black excellence in Washington State. From the earliest recorded Black resident, George Washington Bush in 1845, to today’s community leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, artists, and advocates — Black individuals have helped shape the fabric of this great state in profound and powerful ways.
Each year, we will gather to honor the trailblazers, the quiet heroes, and the powerful voices that define what it means to be Black and excellent in Washington. We will do this through an Annual Awards Gala timed around Juneteenth and Black History Month, supported by a coalition of community members, organizations, and sponsors who believe in the mission of authentic recognition. This is more than an event — it’s a movement. It’s a call to our community and our allies to help us build a living archive of Black brilliance, to ensure that our youth know the greatness they come from, and to inspire them to carry that torch forward.

Where Legacy, Excellence, and Community Converge

So whether you’re a community leader, a student, a family member, a business owner, or simply someone who believes in the power of recognition and truth — you belong here. We invite you to explore, get involved, and become part of the BAWA legacy. Together, we honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape the future.

About BAWA

WHat Is BAWA?

The name BAWA carries deep meaning across cultures: In Garawa, it means “Older Sibling.” In Waskia, it means “Brother.” In Indonesian, it means “To Carry.” In the Parsee community of India, it’s a title of honor and respect. These definitions resonate deeply with our mission — to honor those who carry the weight of leadership, pave paths for others, and lift communities through unwavering commitment and excellence.

BAWA was born from a vision to create an annual gathering that doesn’t just celebrate Black achievement but documents it, uplifts it, and shares it with the world. Our goal is to inspire, educate, and empower — especially the next generation — by showcasing the breadth of Black brilliance across every sector of society: business, education, government, sports, non-profits, religion, the military, and beyond.

Too often, Black accomplishments are woven into broader narratives, losing the clarity and recognition they deserve. BAWA stands as a bold statement: Our stories matter. Our impact is measurable. Our legacy is undeniable.

NOMINATE A CHangeMaker

BAWA will host its first annual awards gala. This prestigious event will celebrate the Black pioneers of Washington who have made exceptional contributions to our society.

We invite you to nominate a deserving Washingtonian and then join us in this monumental effort to honor and uplift Black excellence. The gala will feature awards crafted by Black entrepreneurs and will include community nominations. Our hope is to foster pride and a sense of achievement among Black youth by showcasing the incredible legacies they inherit.

Our Mission

Our Mission

To lead, educate, and empower the Black/African American community in Washington State by celebrating our historical contributions and advocating for education and philanthropy. We strive to be an organization that bridges the past, present, and future, providing historical knowledge and honoring the pivotal roles of our Black leaders. We aim to empower our community especially our youth to realize the dreams of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and other historical figures as it pertains to Washington State.

OUR VISION
To showcase our many Black/African American leaders that has blazed the trail for present and future leaders of this great state.
Celebrating Black Excellence

Why Celebrate Black Achievements?

While we honor the contributions of all races, it is essential to recognize that Black people have a unique history in the United States. Unlike other immigrant groups, Black people did not come to America seeking a better life—they were brought here under brutal conditions. Despite this, their resilience has led to remarkable achievements in all sectors of society. At BAWA, we believe in educating the public and Black youth about the incredible accomplishments of Black individuals, both past and present.
